A pregnancy marked by abandonment and situation filled with economic difficulties. This is the story of Sheryl, a young mother from Mathare, one of the slums on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya.
“I had a difficult pregnancy: if it hadn't been for my cousin who helped me even after giving birth, I don't know how I would have done it. My family has never been there and my sisters live far from Nairobi. I couldn't work and my baby's father refused all responsibility”.
When she got pregnant Sheryl was attending school, but she was forced to drop out when Nelius was born. She has found an odd job as a dishwasher, but it is not even enough to guarantee one hot meal a day for herself and her baby.
Her situation was really critical, but since last May, Sheryl is among 15 young women of the socio-educational project "A job for the young mothers of Mathare”. She attends a workshop to learn a local handicraft job, she receives help with the weekly shopping and psychological support: "This project gives me a lot of confidence and hope. I'm learning many new things that, in the future, might allow me to start my own business".
The “A job for the young mothers of Mathare” project is an aid and capacity development program for young women who are going through a difficult time. In undertaking this path, these young women will be able to acquire skills to work and psychological support to have self-confidence and be able to help their family grow.
In a few days it's Christmas, and you can give Sheryl and many mothers and children of Mathare a future. Thanks to you will they be able to learn to stand on their own two feet.
